Dr. Garnet Cummings

Garnet CummingsDr. Garnet Cummings (MD, BPE, MSc, FRCP, FACEP, EMDM) is an Associate Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine and an Associate Adjunct Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Alberta. He is an energetic and compassionate physician with decades of outstanding service in the medical community.

Garnet earned his MD at the University of Calgary in 1978. From there, he furthered his medical education at a variety of respected institutions in Canada, the United States and Italy. A prolific writer and referee, Garnet’s work has been published in the Canadian Journal of Emergency Medicine, the International Journal of Disaster Medicine and the Canadian Medical Association Journal, just to name a few. He has also made acclaimed presentations on a variety of subjects across Canada with a particular focus on disaster medicine. Garnet’s work has earned him several awards and certificates in Canada and the United States.

As an educator, Garnet has been committed to emergency medicine education at the University of Alberta for more than a decade. He has been involved with fifth year resident preparation for their qualifying exams; to date, every one of his residents has passed.

Due to his hands on involvement with medicine, Garnet is an invaluable addition to the Foundation’s Board of Directors. He has provided the Board with beneficial input on our Men’s Health and Orthopedics campaigns and has faithfully served on our Grants and Distributions committee since 1999.

Garnet has also been a passionate sportsman over the years. In the past, he has run marathons, coached hockey, served as athletic trainer for the Edmonton Eskimos, and acted as physician for the Commonwealth Games and the World Wresting Games.
