Linda Hughes
A graduate of the University of Victoria, Linda Hughes began her career as a reporter with the Victoria Daily News and then moved to the Edmonton Journal, where she quickly made a name as an award-winning reporter. She went on to hold both the City Editor and Managing Editor posts before being named Editor-in-Chief in 1987.
Linda became the first woman to lead a major Canadian daily newspaper when she was named publisher of the Edmonton Journal in 1992. In 1994, she was named in Chatelaine magazine's list of Canada's 50 most influential women. Linda held the top position at the Journal for 15 years until she retired in 2006.
Besides her role with the Foundation, Linda has been active in the Edmonton community over the years. She has an ongoing role as chair of the Mayor's Committee to End Homelessness in Edmonton, served a six-year term on the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council in Ottawa, and also served as a board member of the Alberta Capital Region of the United Way. Linda also had the interesting role of a volunteer consultant to the Bhutan Observer, offering editorial advice to a fledgling newspaper in Bhutan as the country was beginning its transformation into a democracy and experiencing its first taste of a truly free press.
