Anne McLellan

Anne McClellanHon. Anne McLellan PC, BA, LL.B, LL.M, LL.D (Hon.), earned bachelor degrees in Arts and Law from Halifax's Dalhousie University and a Master of Laws from King's College London in the UK. She became a professor of law, first at the University of New Brunswick and then at the University of Alberta where she served at various times as Associate Dean and Dean.

Anne’s first foray into politics was as the successful Liberal candidate for the riding of Edmonton Northwest in the 1993 federal election. She quickly became a rising star in the Liberal Party, being one of only four Liberals elected in Alberta and was named to Jean Chrétien's first Cabinet as Minister of Natural Resources. She was re-elected for three terms, serving as Minister of Justice from 1997 to 2002, Minister of Health from 2002 to 2003 and Minister of the newly created Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness department from 2003 to 2006. From December 2003 to January 2006, Anne also served as Deputy Prime Minister, one of only two women to hold this position.

In July 2006 Anne accepted an appointment as Distinguished Scholar in Residence at the University of Alberta in the newly established Institute for United States Policy Studies (IUSPS).

Anne also is with the national law firm of Bennett Jones LLP, providing strategic advice to the firm and its clients. She also serves on the boards of Nexen, Agrium and Cameco, all publicly traded companies with global operations.  Anne volunteers for the Foundation as a member of Lynn Mandel’s Community Outreach Committee for the Lois Hole Hospital for Women.  She also recently joined the Boards of the Edmonton Airport Authority and Habitat for Humanity.
