C.K. Hui Heart Centre Launches Multicultural Heart Health Awareness Program
Edmonton's Chinese community will be the first residents to benefit from a new program launched by cardiologists at the C.K. Hui Heart Centre in Edmonton.
The Multicultural Heart Health Awareness Program, a first for Alberta, is an awareness project organized by cardiologists at the Royal Alexandra Hospital and will be based at the C.K. Hui Heart Centre upon its opening on the Royal Alexandra Hospital campus in late 2010.
The Multicultural Heart Health Awareness Program will raise awareness of signs and symptoms of cardiovascular disease and stroke among diverse populations of the greater Edmonton area. The first residents to benefit will be members of the Chinese community, through the rollout of the Chinese Heart Health Initiative.
"This is an exciting day for heart health in our city and in the province of Alberta," says the Hon. Anne McLellan, Chair of the C.K. Hui Heart Centre Campaign, who announced the new initiative to delegates attending the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress and members of the public.
"We live in a society where communication occurs at a frenetic pace, but we need to remember that sometimes, what we think is clearly understood is just not so. Knowledge of heart attack and stroke symptoms - among some residents of Edmonton's multicultural communities - has been lacking. Cardiologists at the Royal Alexandra Hospital are launching this program to address this lack of awareness and they are starting with the Chinese community."
The Multicultural Heart Health Awareness Program and its Chinese Heart Health Initiative are both supported by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta, NWT & Nunavut and the Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation.
