Speaking of Health lectures are free to the public and take place from 7:00 - 9:00 PM in the gymnasium of the Community Services Centre at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, located at 10415 111 Ave. Seating is limited and registration is on a first come, first serve basis. If a program you wish to attend is full at the time we receive your registration, we will contact you. Otherwise, please consider your registration confirmed.
Parking for Speaking of Health is free. Please use the parking lot located on the north side of Kingsway, on the far west side of the Royal Alexandra Hospital campus.

October 7, 7:00 pm: Preventing Heart Disease in Middle Age
Presented by: Dr. Benjamin Tyrell
It is a sobering statistic: more Canadians die every year of heart disease than all forms of cancer combined. The risk of heart disease increases as we age, with most serious heart conditions manifesting themselves in middle age. What are the best preventative measures that we can take to avoid heart disease as we head into middle age and our senior years? Dr. Ben Tyrrell will discuss lifestyle options and early treatment for those who might be at risk for heart disease.

October 14, 7:00 pm: Prostate Cancer: The Latest Developments in Treatment
Presented by: Dr. Michael Hobart
Prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer in men, with one in seven men receiving a diagnosis of prostate cancer in their lifetime. The Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation, the University Hospital Foundation and the Alberta Cancer Foundation are taking a lead in the battle against prostate cancer and prostate disease with a $26 million Campaign for Prostate Health. Since 2007, the Royal Alexandra Hospital has been equipped with the latest in robotic surgery technology and the surgeons using this state-of-the-art equipment are considered among the best in Canada. Dr. Michael Hobart will discuss the latest developments and treatments in the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer.

October 21, 7:00 pm: Pelvic Organ Prolapse: The Hidden Epidemic
Presented by: Dr. Cathy Flood & Dr. Darren Lazarre
Ten percent of women experience symptoms relayed to Pelvic Organ Prolapse, yet we seldom hear about it. Women often suffer in silence despite devastating effects on their quality of life. The silence is often due to a lack of knowledge about what is happening, as well as embarrassment over this uncomfortable situation. Drs. Cathy Flood and Darren Lazarre from the Lois Hole Hospital for Women will explain common symptoms of Pelvic Organ Prolapse, as well as a discuss the way prolapse is diagnosed, treatment options and a critical look at the newest procedures available.

October 28, 7:00 pm: CN Injury Prevention Series presents: Keeping Young Drivers Alive
Presented by: Dr. Louis Hugo Francescutti
After parents and caregivers stop worrying about childhood cuts and scrapes, they are faced with a much bigger concern: their kids are learning to drive a vehicle for the first time. In spite of all the safety advances of the last few decades – seatbelts, airbags, improved crash standards – young driver death rates in Alberta remain unacceptably high. This informative presentation by Dr. Louis Hugo Francescutti, a well-known expert in the field of injury prevention, will look at the challenging problem of modern driver safety and discuss some of the best strategies to keep drivers of all ages safe behind the wheel.
