With advances in treatments for coronary diseases and heart failure, patients have an increased opportunity to live longer, but also the unfortunate increased likelihood of developing atrial fibrillation.
While medications have traditionally been used to treat atrial fibrillation, they can be insufficient in treating severe or complex cases. AV node ablation provides an alternative, allowing patients to maintain a regular heart rate and improve their quality of life.
The Need
AV node ablation is a critical procedure for managing difficult cases of atrial fibrillation. It involves implanting a pacemaker and removing the AV node, thus stabilizing the patient's heart rate.
Currently, all patients requiring AV node ablation must visit the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute, resulting in long wait times and impacting the care process. With proper equipment, this procedure can be offered at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, reducing delays and improving patient health outcomes.
