For more than 50 years, the cardiology team at the CK Hui Heart Centre has prided themselves on advancing the science of cardiology and, in the last decade, has acquired an international reputation in the field of interventional cardiology.
Physicians from around the world have been coming to the Royal Alexandra Hospital to study the latest advances being made, and right in the thick of it is Dr. Benjamin Tyrrell.
Partner in the Multi-Cultural Health Initiative, Clinical Researcher, Vital Heart Doctor, and Director of the CK Hui Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, the Cardiac Catheterization Lab, Interventional Fellowship, and Site Education. These are just a few of the hats that Dr. Tyrrell wears at the CK Hui Heart Centre.
“I was drawn to interventional cardiology because it combines my favourite aspects of both medicine and surgery,” says Tyrrell. “The fast-paced adrenaline rush of managing heart attacks, combined with the technical aspects of the catheterization lab we have here, and the opportunity to follow my patients in clinic long term is very satisfying.”
In 2019 alone, the CK Hui Heart Centre had over 900 intensive care patients, over 4,000 cardiac catheterizations and more than 2,000 percutaneous coronary interventions.
Innovation wasn’t the only thing that drew him to the CK Hui. “I love to teach what I know to students, residents and fellows. Watching them grow and develop into the next generation of physicians is one of the best things about my job.”
“It’s a lot, but I love everything that I do. My mentors have always stressed the importance of taking on active leadership in medicine,” says Tyrrell. “I have been lucky enough to be involved in many areas, hopefully making a difference.”
As we celebrate Heart Month 2020 this February, it is our honour also to celebrate the staff and physicians of the CK Hui Heart Centre. Without them, the centre would not be the place of innovative and compassionate care that it is today!
