The Global Citizenship Award was awarded to Dr. Damji for his dedication to global health. He and his team are working to reduce blindness as a result of glaucoma in Sub-Saharan Africa. With the help of funding from the Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation, Dr. Damji and his colleagues are training ophthalmologists to become glaucoma subspecialists through their program called STOP Glaucoma in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Dr. Damji is not only the Chief of Ophthalmology at the Eye Institute of Alberta, located at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, but he is also the head of the University of Alberta’s Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. Dr. Damji and his colleagues at the Eye Institute of Alberta, the University of Alberta, and the University of Ottawa are working together in order to increase early detection in glaucoma.
