One of the most difficult things surgeons have to do in a day is to tell a patient they have cancer.
Annually more than 1,000 patients at the Lois Hole Hospital for Women are diagnosed with some form of gynecological cancer. Patients who can take comfort in knowing one of the latest innovations in care is now available thanks to the women and men of the Lois Hole Hospital Women’s Society.
The Fluorescence Imaging Upgrade to the da Vinci Surgical Robot, also known as Firefly, has been fully funded by the Society and is now allowing for state-of-the-art gynecological cancer surgeries to take place.
“Technology plays a vital role in cancer surgery and patient outcomes are shaped by innovation, new techniques and cutting-edge procedures,” said Dr. Valerie Capstick, gynecologic oncology surgeon at the Lois Hole Hospital for Women. “The da Vinci robot with the Fluorescence Imaging Upgrade is used to treat women with cancers of the cervix, uterus and endometrium, and really transforms the way our surgical team is able to see and therefore treat gynecological cancers.”

The group’s first successful fundraising campaign is proof-positive that they are making a profound difference in the lives of women across Alberta and beyond. Since its inception, less than two short years ago, they have successfully raised more than $450,000.
