Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation

Dr. Black occupies a special place in the hearts and minds of many staff and physicians at the Royal Alexandra Hospital where he provided care and treatment for many years, as well as the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital and later, the CK Hui Heart Centre.

This well-respected cardiologist served patients for more than 50 years, and was one of the leading innovators in cardiology at this hospital, helping to establish Alberta’s first coronary care unit at the Royal Alex.  Indeed, cardiology has a distinguished history at the Royal Alexandra Hospital and Dr. Bill Black, with his uncompromising commitment to outstanding patient care, was at the heart of this innovation alongside esteemed colleagues such as Dr. Tal Talibi, Dr. Peter Klinke, Dr. William Hui, and others.

Our Foundation was fortunate to count Dr. Black as a good friend, too. During his retirement, Dr. Black assisted the Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation in a capital fundraising campaign for the CK Hui Heart Centre.  He served diligently and proudly on the campaign cabinet, which was chaired by the Hon. Anne McLellan, ultimately raising more than $8 million for a new, state-of-the-art consolidated centre of cardiac care, the CK Hui Heart Centre.

The CK Hui Heart Centre, which opened in 2011, treats more than 50,000 patients each year and the cardiologists who work there, many who worked with Dr. Black, continue to build upon the innovation in care he created all those years ago.  This is a legacy in which we are all very proud, and for which we continued to work with a strong community of passionate donors.
