For years, patients and families struggling with addiction and mental illness have faced barriers to access for the treatment and support they require. Soon the obstacles to access will be removed with the opening of a new 24 hour, seven days a week addiction and mental health care centre at the Royal Alexandra Hospital.

On May 15, 2019, The Stollery Charitable Foundation made a $75,000 gift of support to the Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation helping to open the doors to the Addiction and Mental Health Access 24/7 Centre.

“We are aware of the challenges that the current health care system has in regards to mental health treatment,” said Jeff Bryson, Executive Director, Stollery Charitable Foundation. “Many of us, through our own friends and family, have experienced the difficulties accessing treatment that they need. We recognize that the system needs a bit of restructuring to be more effective to care for peoples mental health needs and having a dedicated access point is a promising first step to providing better mental health care access around the capital region.”

“I also think that there seems to be growing evidence of the efficacy of peer support and that it makes mental health and addictions care more accessible when patients are welcomed and supported by those with lived experience.”
